Does ChatGPT put watermarks in its text?
Text from AI tools sometimes contains invisible Unicode characters, such as narrow no-break spaces (U+202F) or zero-width spaces. They're often called "watermarks", but OpenAI has said they're a quirk of the model's output, not a deliberate marker. Either way, they can cause odd behaviour in editors, code and forms, and this tool removes them.
Can this remove every AI watermark?
No, and no tool honestly can. Some AI providers, such as Google with SynthID, embed a statistical pattern in the choice of words itself. There's no special character to remove: the pattern only disappears if the text is substantially rewritten. TextStrip removes the characters and formatting that come along with copied text, not patterns in the wording.
What does each option do?
Invisible characters removes zero-width spaces and joiners, byte order marks, soft hyphens and direction marks. Special spaces turns non-breaking, narrow and other unusual spaces into normal spaces. Markdown removes **bold**, _italic_, # headings, `code`, > quotes and horizontal rules, and turns [links](url) into "links (url)". Citations & tracking removes markers like 【1†source】 and turn0search0, and utm_ parameters from links. Em dashes replaces — with a regular hyphen. Smart quotes turns “curly” quotes into "straight" ones and … into three dots.
Will it make my text undetectable as AI?
That's not what it's for. AI detectors look mainly at writing style, which this tool doesn't change. It cleans up the technical leftovers so your text behaves like normal text wherever you paste it.
